July 25, 2013 - Scholarships Awarded to Eleven Students in First Year

FORT WORTH, TEXAS - Specifically targeting hardworking students living in public and Section 8 Housing, The Nelrod Education Fund Scholarship Committee is proud to announce this year's national scholarship winners.

Over the past year, The Nelrod Education Fund (NEF) and its volunteers have worked diligently to establish a scholarship to help young people living in public and Section 8 housing pursue further education and career opportunities.

Years of working in the public and assisted housing industry and working with these needy families have proven that there are smart and deserving students living in these programs. However, often they face extraordinary challenges at home - from a lack of resources to taking on additional responsibility at home. All of these distract from their academic efforts.

"We see the need every day. Hard working students want to break the cycle of poverty by working long hours after school. They make a little money to help their families, but their school work suffers. They want to attend college or trade school, but this usually means going it debt," says Alfredo Castaneda, Executive Director Carrizo Springs HA.

The scholarship committee received applications from across the country - including Texas, Colorado, Ohio, and Virginia. All of this year's applicants are exceptional students and responsible citizens as made evident by their commitment to academic success and community service.

January 16, 2013 - The Nelrod Education Fund announces cookbook recipe contest to raise scholarship funding!

To begin raising funds to support this mission, The Nelrod Education Fund (NEF) is sponsoring the Cooking for A Better Tomorrow Recipe Contest. This contest is open to all low income families residing in public and assisted housing programs!

One Resident will be chosen by each agency to receive $25 for the publishing of their recipe. The Top 100 Recipes from all participating housing agencies will then be published in the cookbook. Proceeds from this cookbook will be used to fund scholarships to support youth living in public and assisted housing and help defray eligible costs and expenses of higher education.

We need your help! The Nelrod Education Fund is asking all Nelrod Consortium Housing Agency Partners to gather recipes from their residents, and select one (1) winning recipe. To encourage greater participation among your residents, The NEF is offering $25 for the Best recipe from each Housing Agency. We hope your agency will choose to participate in this recipe contest and help us provide meaningful scholarships for ā€œCā€ Students living in public and assisted housing.
